Vackayil Sree Dharmasastha Temple
Vadayar, Thalayolaparambu, Dist. Kottayam.
Vackayil Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is located at Vadayar (Cheerekkadavu), near Thalayolaparambu in the Kottayam district of Kerala. Lord Ayyappa (Dharma Sastha) is the main deity of this ancient temple. Built in the traditional Kerala style of temple architecture, the temple is an important place of worship in the region. Devotees visit the temple throughout the year for darshan and offerings. Special poojas and rituals are conducted during the Mandala–Makaravilakku season and the annual temple festival.
The temple’s exact year of establishment and age remain uncertain due to the absence of documented historical records. However, based on the architectural style of the Sreekovil and the remains of older foundations, the temple is estimated to be around 200 to 300 years old. As the Vadayar and Chirekadavu regions were active settlements during the Travancore period, it is believed that the temple may have been established by prominent families of that era. Over time,
the temple has undergone renovation and restoration works in several phases and some of the structures seen today were constructed during more recent periods. At present, the day-to-day administration and financial management of the temple are carried out by a temple committee elected democratically by the local devotees.
According to local tradition, the place where the temple stands came to be known as “Vackayil” because it was believed to be the place where the deity’s vaakku (promise or assurance) was fulfilled. The legend states that Lord Dharma Sastha gave a promise to a devotee, either through a dream or a divine vision and the locality was subsequently named in remembrance of that event.
Another local belief holds that the presiding Dharma Sastha embodies the same divine presence as Lord Ayyappa of Sabarimala and manifested here to bless elderly devotees and women who were unable to undertake the traditional pilgrimage to Sabarimala. As a result, the temple holds particular significance during the Mandala–Makaravilakku season.
Built in the traditional Kerala style of temple architecture, the temple features a padippura-style entrance gateway with a tiled roof, with a signboard displaying the name of the temple at its centre. Beyond the gateway stands a large elephant shelter and in front of it, along the circumambulatory path, is a large lamp tower where devotees offer lamps as part of their vows. The outer walls of the nalambalam surrounding the main shrine are topped with a tiled roof and fitted with traditional black wooden lattice panels. During the Mandala season, these lattice panels are illuminated with rows of oil lamps. Before entering the nalambalam, devotees pass through a spacious circumambulatory path paved with granite slabs.
Inside the main entrance is the square-shaped nalambalam, where the principal rituals are performed and prasadam is distributed. Directly in front of the sreekovil is a small mandapam, where the priests and thantris offer prayers and perform Vedic rituals.
The temple has a single-storeyed square (Chathura) Sreekovil built in the traditional Kerala temple architectural style. The adhishtana (base) and the lower portion of the walls are constructed of finely dressed granite blocks, while the upper structure features traditional timber work supporting a sloping tiled roof. A granite sopanam (entrance steps) leads to the sanctum, flanked by granite handrails on either side. A granite pranala (water spout) is provided on the side of the Sreekovil to drain the abhisheka water. The principal deity, Dharma Sastha (Lord Ayyappa), is represented by an idol carved from Krishna Shila (black granite). The idol is installed in a yogic seated posture similar to that of the Sabarimala deity, wearing a Yogapatta (meditation band), with the left hand resting on the left knee and the right hand held in the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of protection and reassurance).
In addition to the principal deity, Dharma Sastha (Lord Ayyappa), the temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Malikappurathamma (Bhagavathy) and the naga deities. The shrine of Lord Ganesha is situated at the south-west corner (Kannimoola) within the Nalambalam, while Malikappurathamma has a separate shrine. The temple also has a naga shrine where Nagaraja and Nagayakshi are enshrined.
The temple’s principal annual festival is generally celebrated during the Malayalam month of Makaram (January–February), commencing with the Kodiyettam (flag hoisting) and concluding with the Arattu ceremony.
During the festival, special poojas and rituals are conducted, along with Thalappoli, Pallivetta and the Arattu procession. Cultural programmes such as Kathakali, Chakyar Koothu and Ganamela are also organised. The Mandala–Makaravilakku season, observed from the first day of the Malayalam month of Vrischikam until Makaravilakku, is the most important worship period at the temple. Special rituals including Neyyabhishekam, Mandala Pooja, Chuttuvilakku and Kanji Sadya are performed during this period. In addition, Saturdays, the temple’s consecration day, Uthram in the Malayalam month of Meenam (Panguni Uthiram) and the first day of every Malayalam month are also observed as important occasions at the temple.
The main offerings at the temple include Neerajanam (sesame oil lamp), Ellu Payasam (Kaduthu Payasam), Neyyabhishekam (ghee ablution), Neelanjanam and the offering of black or blue silk cloth. Devotees perform these offerings primarily seeking relief from the adverse effects of Saturn (Shani Dosha), success in endeavours, removal of hardships and prosperity.
Ganapathi Homam and Appam Moodal are offered to remove obstacles and to seek blessings for the successful commencement of new ventures. At the temple’s Naga shrine, special poojas, Sarpam Paattu and Noorum Palum are conducted on the Ayilyam star day of every Malayalam month. Devotees participate in these rituals seeking relief from Naga Dosha, family well-being and the blessing of children.
The temple opens daily at 04:30 AM and the day’s rituals begin with Nirmalya Darshanam. This is followed by Abhishekam at 05:00 AM, Malar Nivedyam at 05:30 AM, Usha Pooja at 06:30 AM and Ucha Pooja at 10:00 AM, after which the temple closes at 10:30 AM. The temple reopens at 05:00 PM. Deeparadhana is performed at 06:30 PM, followed by Athazha Pooja at 07:15 PM. The temple closes for the day at 07:30 PM after the recitation of Harivarasanam.
