The SMVS Swaminarayan Temple at Godhar village in Mahisagar district is regarded as one of the region’s foremost religious and social centres. Established in 2005 and administered by the ‘Swaminarayan Mandir Vasna Sanstha’ (SMVS), the temple works to instil spiritual values and promote social reform among the predominantly tribal and economically disadvantaged communities of the area. Alongside its religious activities, the temple has become an important centre of faith through its initiatives in healthcare, education and de-addiction.
The Swaminarayan Sampradaya is a Vaishnava tradition established in Gujarat in the early nineteenth century by Bhagwan Swaminarayan (Sahajanand Swami). Over time, several organisations were founded to preserve and propagate his original philosophy. Among them, the ‘Swaminarayan Mandir Vasna Sanstha’ (SMVS) has emerged as a prominent spiritual and social institution.
It is widely known for its headquarters in the Vasna area of Ahmedabad and for its extensive religious and humanitarian activities.
The organisation was established under the inspiration of Param Pujya Devanandandas Swami (Bapji) to propagate the pure worship and teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Its activities expanded significantly from around 1987 onwards. The organisation established its principal temple and headquarters at Vasna in Ahmedabad. Its spiritual lineage is rooted in the teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Gopalanand Swami and Jeevanpran Abji Bapashri. The institution’s entire spiritual journey is founded upon the belief that Bhagwan Swaminarayan is the Supreme Parabrahman and that the enlightened saints embody His living presence.
Inspired by Gurudev Bapji, the temple at Godhar was completed in 2005 to serve the spiritual needs of the tribal communities of the Panchmahal and Mahisagar regions. With its establishment, Godhar became an important regional centre of the SMVS organisation. The institution has since constructed more than eighty temples in India and abroad. Among them, the Godhar temple has become a focal point for regional religious and social activities. Spiritually, the temple remains firmly rooted in the original principles of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya.
Godhar village is situated on the Ahmedabad–Jhalod Highway in Mahisagar district. Formerly part of Panchmahal district, it is home to ‘Tirthdham Godhar’, administered by the SMVS organisation.
A grand gateway stands within the compound wall surrounding the temple complex. It has been designed in the traditional North Indian and Swaminarayan architectural style. A large central entrance allows vehicles to pass through, while smaller arched passages on either side are reserved for pedestrians. The uppermost section of the gateway features a central ornamental pavilion, flanked by two smaller pavilions at either end. Passing through the gateway, visitors enter the spacious temple courtyard.
The temple has been constructed in the North Indian Nagara style of architecture. Thirteen steps lead from the courtyard to the entrance porch of the temple, which is situated on the upper level. The entrance porch is supported by intricately carved pillars and graceful arches.
From here, devotees enter the spacious assembly hall. At its far end is an open sanctum, enclosed by transparent glass panels, where the deities and sacred images are installed upon a marble pedestal. Three golden thrones stand upon this marble platform. The central throne is dedicated to Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan in the form of Ghanshyam Maharaj and is surmounted by an elaborately carved golden canopy. On either side are the thrones of Harikrishna Maharaj and Gurudev Bapji of the SMVS spiritual lineage. Between these thrones are eight framed portraits of the principal saints and gurus of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya and the SMVS tradition, displayed in elegant golden frames.
The religious activities of the SMVS organisation are conducted with discipline and devotion.
The study, contemplation and propagation of the ‘Vachanamrut’ and the ‘Shikshapatri’, the principal scriptures composed by Bhagwan Swaminarayan, form the institution’s primary objective. The daily routine begins here with the Mangala Aarti at 6:00 a.m. The Shringar Aarti follows this at 7:15 a.m., while the evening Sandhya Aarti is performed at 7:00 p.m. After the regular aartis, devotees participate in discourses on the Swaminarayan tradition and devotional kirtans. The ceremonial abhishek of Ghanshyam Maharaj with water and panchamrut is regarded as one of the temple’s principal religious observances.
Religious discourses, devotional singing and satsang assemblies are held here every day. Special programmes are organised to instil moral values in children and young people and to encourage them to remain free from addiction. Every Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., separate assemblies are conducted for boys and girls. Every Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., youth assemblies for young men and women provide spiritual guidance and moral education.
The Godhar temple celebrates numerous religious festivals throughout the year. Among them, the Guru Purnima Festival, observed during the month of Ashadha, is one of the most significant. On this occasion, the organisation’s spiritual head, Pujya Swamishri, addresses the devotees during a special spiritual assembly and discourses on the Swaminarayan tradition are delivered. Thousands of devotees gather for Guru worship and darshan.
On Kartiki Pratipada, the Hindu New Year’s Day following Diwali, the temple hosts the New Year Blessings Assembly and the Annakut Darshan. A grand offering of a wide variety of vegetarian dishes is presented before Ghanshyam Maharaj, after which Mahaprasad is distributed among the devotees.
The temple’s annual Patotsav and the Ghanshyam Maharaj Abhishek constitute another major religious event of the year. On the day of the Patotsav, the sacred images are ceremonially bathed amidst the chanting of Vedic mantras. During the month of Phalguna, Vasant Panchami and Rangotsav (Holi) are celebrated according to tradition. During Rangotsav, the deity is showered with natural gulal. In the month of Bhadrapada, the birth anniversary and memorial day of the revered founder, Gurudev Bapji, are observed through a special assembly. In addition, a Sankalp Sabha is held on every Ekadashi, while the Poonam Samaiyo is celebrated on every full moon day. Devotees may have darshan at the temple daily from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and again from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
