Manalady Sree Mahavishnu Temple
Manalady, Attoor, Dist. Thrissur.
Manalady Sree Mahavishnu Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located at Manalady on Chelakkara Road in Thrissur district, Kerala. The main deity of the temple is Lord Mahavishnu. Set in a peaceful rural setting, the temple follows the traditional Kerala style of temple architecture. It is one of the important Mahavishnu temples in the region and is visited by many devotees throughout the year.
The exact date of the temple’s establishment is not recorded. However, the architectural style of the temple, particularly its circular sanctum (Vatta Sreekovil) and traditional Nalambalam, suggests that it may have been built during the Chera period (8th–12th centuries AD) or the later period of the local kingdoms. It is believed that the temple was originally managed by local chieftains or Brahmin Oorayma families. According to local tradition, the temple suffered damage during the invasions and conflicts in the Malabar–Cochin border region and remained neglected for many years. In recent times, the temple was restored through the joint efforts of local residents and devotees. The sanctum and Chuttambalam were renovated and the deity was reconsecrated according to traditional rituals. Today, the temple is managed by a local trust or committee.
There are no well-known legends or mythological stories associated with this temple. Instead, its heritage is closely connected with local beliefs and the collective efforts of the surrounding community. Rather than being known for myths, the temple is recognised for its long-standing tradition of worship and the continued support and preservation of the local community.
Passing through the temple’s main entrance gateway (Padippura), visitors enter a spacious courtyard. An Anappanthal and an ancient stone Deepasthambham stand at the front. The temple is surrounded by greenery and large trees, creating a pleasant rural setting. Passing through the traditional tiled Nalambalam, visitors reach the area in front of the sanctum, where a square Namaskara Mandapam is located. The temple reflects the traditional Kerala style of temple architecture, with a design that blends well with its natural surroundings.
The main architectural feature of the temple is its circular sanctum (Vatta Sreekovil), built in the traditional Kerala style.
The sanctum stands on a granite base and has a conical tiled roof topped with a copper finial. A stone Sopanam (flight of steps) leads to the sanctum. The main deity is Lord Mahavishnu, represented by a four-armed idol carved from black stone, holding the conch (Shankha), discus (Chakra), mace (Gada) and lotus (Padma). Within the Nalambalam, Lord Ganesha is enshrined in the south-east corner. Outside the Nalambalam are shrines dedicated to Lord Shasta, Goddess Bhagavathi and the naga deities, Naga Raja and Naga Yakshi, beneath the trees in the sacred naga grove.
The main annual festival of the temple is the Prathishta Dinam Mahotsavam (consecration anniversary festival). On this occasion, special Kalashabhishekam, special poojas, Palpayasam offering and Annadanam are conducted. In the evening, traditional performances such as Nadaswaram and Thayambaka are also held. As Lord Mahavishnu is the main deity, Ashtami Rohini, various Ekadashi days, especially Guruvayur Ekadashi and Vishu are observed with special poojas.
Since the temple also has a shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, special poojas, bhajans and Ramayanam recitation are conducted during the Mandala season and the Malayalam month of Karkidakam.
The main offerings at the temple include Palpayasam, Vishnu Sukta Pushpanjali, Sahasranama Archana, Tulsi Mala offering and Nei Vilakku (ghee lamp). Devotees perform these offerings seeking prosperity, family well-being, fulfilment of wishes, good health and peace of mind. Offerings to the other deities include Ganapathi Homam, Ottayappam and Karuka Mala to Lord Ganesha for the removal of obstacles; Ellu Thiri and Neeranjanam to Lord Shasta for relief from the effects of Shani; and Noorum Palum and Puttum Mutta to the naga deities as remedies for naga dosha.
The temple opens daily at 05:30 AM with Nirmalya Darshan. This is followed by Usha Pooja at 06:00 AM and Ucha Pooja at 08:30 AM. The temple closes at 09:00 AM. On Thursdays, the temple opens at 05:15 AM and on Tuesdays at 05:30 AM, with darshan available until 09:30 AM. The temple reopens at 05:30 PM, followed by Deeparadhana at 06:30 PM and Athazha Pooja, after which the temple closes for the day at 07:00 PM.
