Cherayikkal Sree Subramanya Swamy Temple
Vengalloor, Thodupuzha, Dist. Idukki.
Located in the Vengalloor–Cherayikkal area near Thodupuzha in Idukki district, Vengalloor Cherayikkal Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple is a prominent Hindu place of worship. Close to Thodupuzha town, the temple’s main deity is Sree Subrahmanya Swamy (Murugan). As Sree Narayana Gurudeva is also worshipped here, the temple is known as Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Gurudeva Temple.
The temple was established as part of the social reform activities led by Sree Narayana Guru during the first half of the 20th century. It belongs to the tradition of Subrahmanya temples established during that period with the Guru’s approval and inspired by his ideas, often under the local leadership of Advaita Ashrams or the SNDP Yogam, to ensure freedom of worship for socially disadvantaged communities. During the period of the former Travancore rule, the temple provided a place for local people in the Vengalloor area of Thodupuzha to come together and hold social gatherings. Therefore, it is more than a place of worship and can also be seen as a historical symbol of local social change and resistance to caste-based exclusion.
Over the past few decades, the temple has undergone major renovation work under the leadership of the local community committee. As a result, the old small shrine was replaced by the larger temple complex seen today. In temples of this tradition,
Sree Subrahmanya Swamy (Murugan) is generally worshipped in the form of the commander of the divine army after defeating Tarakasura; this is part of the general Puranic tradition. Among devotees, there is also a spiritual belief that in temples established by Sree Narayana Guru or following his ideals, the presence of the Guru remains along with the installed deity.
Near the Thodupuzha–Muvattupuzha Road in the Vengalloor area, a small gateway tower and a signboard reading ‘Vengalloor Cherayikkal Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple’ can be seen at the entrance to the temple. After passing through the main entrance, a large elephant shelter in front of the temple can be seen. Kavadi dance and traditional percussion performances are held here during festivals. Beyond the Kerala-style temple compound wall, a spacious temple courtyard can be seen, with the chuttambalam located at its centre.
The main shrine is built in the straight-line architectural style commonly seen in Kerala temples. This relatively new structure was built after the renovation while retaining the traditional Kerala temple style. A flight of steps carved from granite leads to the sopanam, which is used only by the priests to enter the shrine. Dwarapalaka sculptures and decorative features can be seen on either side of the shrine door. The shrine has the sloping roof typical of Kerala temples.
The roof is tiled to allow rainwater to flow off easily, with a finial placed above it. The main deity, Sree Subrahmanya Swamy, is worshipped in a calm and pleasant form as Balasubrahmanya. The black stone idol is installed holding the vel, the traditional spear of Murugan and faces east.
A separate mandapam next to the main Sree Subrahmanya Swamy shrine houses the idol of Sree Narayana Gurudeva. The idol is shown in a calm and dignified meditative posture. Sree Ganapathy is installed in the Kanni Moola of the temple. A separate shrine for Sree Dharmasastha (Ayyappa) can also be seen inside the chuttambalam or in the temple courtyard.
A naga shrine has been arranged within the temple compound for the naga deities. The shrine contains idols of Naga Raja, Naga Yakshi and other naga deities.
The temple’s biggest annual festival is Thaipooyam in the Malayalam month of Makaram (January–February). Kavadi dance, an offering associated with Sree Subrahmanya Swamy, is the main ceremony during Thaipooyam. Devotees observe the required vows and arrive at the temple in procession carrying flower kavadi and ash kavadi. Special abhishekams and poojas are performed for Sree Subrahmanya Swamy during the festival, along with traditional percussion performances at the elephant shelter. As Sree Narayana Gurudeva is worshipped here, Chathaya day in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September) is observed as Gurudeva Jayanthi. During the Mandala season, from 1 Vrischikam to 11 Dhanu (November–December), special lamps and poojas are held for Ayyappa, the sub-deity. On the Karthika day in the month of Vrischikam, Thrikkarthika is celebrated by lighting coconut-shell lamps and earthen lamps in and around the temple. On Skanda Shashti in the Malayalam month of Thulam (October–November), special offerings are made to Sree Subrahmanya Swamy and devotees observing the Shashti fast visit the temple for darshan. On Ayilyam days every month, special Nagarootu and Sarpabali are performed at the naga shrine for the naga deities.
The main offerings to Sree Subrahmanya Swamy are Panchamritam, Bhasmabhishekam, Ghee Abhishekam and Milk Abhishekam. Devotees believe that Panchamritam and Bhasmabhishekam are performed for relief from illness and difficulties. Abhishekams using ghee and milk are also important offerings. Shadsukta Pushpanjali is performed for good health, career advancement and the removal of obstacles. Vedivazhipadu is performed for the removal of obstacles, while Narangamala is offered to remove enemy-related afflictions and for the fulfilment of wishes. Special Gurupooja is performed to seek the blessings of Gurudeva, while Pushpanjali is offered at the Gurudeva shrine for mental well-being and success in education.
Ganapathihomam and Appam Nivedyam are important offerings to Kanni Moola Ganapathy for the removal of obstacles. Elluvilakku is offered to Sastha on Saturdays and during the Mandala season to seek relief from Shani-related afflictions. Paalum Noorum is an important offering to the naga deities on Ayilyam days for relief from naga-related afflictions.
The temple’s general darshan hours are usually from 05:00 AM to 10:00 AM and from 05:30 PM to 07:00 PM. Timings may change on special days and during festivals. The temple opens at 05:00 AM with the sound of the conch, followed by Nirmalya Darshan. Abhishekams are then performed using clean water, milk and sacred ash. After sunrise, Ushapooja and Ganapathihomam at Kanni Moola Ganapathy are performed for the removal of obstacles. Between 09:30 AM and 10:00 AM, the offering and Uchappooja are completed before the temple closes for the morning. The temple reopens at 05:30 PM. Deepaaradhana with camphor aarti is held from around 06:15 PM to 06:30 PM. After the evening pooja and prayers at the Gurudeva mandapam, the temple closes at around 07:00 PM.
