Panniyur Sri Varahamurthy Temple

Kumbidi, Pattambi, Dist. Palakkad.

Located at Kumbidi in the Palakkad district of Kerala, the Panniyur Sri Varahamurthy Temple is one of the oldest and most historically significant great temples in the state. It is among the rare temples in Kerala where Sri Varahamurthy, the Varaha incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is the principal deity. With a heritage that stretches back thousands of years, the temple has remained a revered centre of worship and devotion for centuries. It is also renowned as the last temple believed to have been built by the legendary architect and master craftsman Uliyannoor Perunthachan. Rich in history, remarkable architecture and spiritual significance, the temple continues to attract devotees, pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike.
Between approximately 800 BC and AD 600, Sri Varahamurthy was regarded as one of the most important deities worshipped in Kerala. During this period, Panniyur was a major pilgrimage centre for Namboothiris and local rulers. References to the temple can be found in traditional texts such as Keralolpathi. Ancient stone inscriptions discovered at the temple indicate that around 1,200 years ago it was administered by a powerful Brahmin organisation known as Panniyur Ayiram. Historians also believe that it was during this period that Uliyannoor Perunthachan carried out the reconstruction of the temple. Panniyur, which worshipped Varahamurthy and Sukapuram, which worshipped Dakshinamurthy, were engaged in a long-standing rivalry for prominence. This rivalry later involved the rulers of Kerala, with the Zamorin of Calicut supporting the Pan-niyur faction and the Valluvakonathiri of Valluvanad supporting the Sukapuram faction. Historical records mention this rivalry as an important chapter in Kerala’s history.
As a result of the factional rivalries and continuous wars, Panniyur and its temple, which were once among the most prominent centres in Kerala, gradually declined. Temple rituals came to a halt and the idols suffered damage over time. In 1758, a new idol was consecrated under the guidance of Puzhakkara Chennamangalam Namboothiri. Later, the temple came under the supervision of the Zamorin of Calicut. Today, under the administration of the Malabar Devaswom Board and the Panniyur Temple Trust and with the support of devotees, the temple is steadily regaining its former glory and grandeur.
According to legend, after his victory over the Kshatriyas, Parasurama donated all that he had acquired to Sage Kashyapa and began searching for a place suitable for meditation. It is believed that he then reclaimed a small piece of land from the sea, which later expanded to become present-day Kerala. Concerned by the continuous growth of this land, Parasurama sought the advice of Sage Narada, who instructed him to worship Lord Vishnu. After a long period of penance, Lord Vishnu appeared before him and said that if he consecrated and worshipped his Varaha incarnation—the form he had taken to save the Earth—at that place, he would receive the blessings of the Trimurti. Following this divine instruction, Parasurama is believed to have established the Sri Varahamurthy Temple here thousands of years ago. Legend also states that this was the first great temple founded by Parasurama in Kerala.
A famous legend is associated with the fact that some parts of the temple, including the sanctum sanctorum (Sreekovil), remain unfinished even today. It is believed that the reconstruction of the temple was undertaken by Uliyannoor Perunthachan, the legendary master craftsman of the Parayi Petta Panthirukulam. According to the story, he wasbuilding a temple of such extraordinary beauty that it could rival even heaven itself. Seeing this, Lord Indra became jealous and created various obstacles to prevent the work from being completed. Eventually, Perunthachan realised that divine forces were hindering his efforts. Frustrated, he threw down his chisel and measuring rod, declaring that no one should complete the work thereafter and left the site. Legend says that from that day onwards, no one has been able to finish the construction of the Sreekovil and its upper structure remains temporarily roofed even today. Devotees also believe that the chisel and measuring rod thrown down by Perunthachan are still preserved within the temple premises.
Located near the tributaries of the Bharathapuzha River, the Panniyur Sri Varahamurthy Temple stands in a calm, green and rural setting. One of its main attractions is the vast pond known as Matsyatheertham, which spreads over several acres adjacent to the temple. This great temple is an excellent example of Kerala temple architecture and the craftsmanship of the legendary master builder Uliyannoor Perunthachan. It features strong compound walls and a spacious sanctum area. A unique feature of the temple is that the upper part of the Sreekovil remains incomplete and is still covered with a temporary tiled roof. In addition, the stone base and pillars of an ancient Koothambalam located in the south-west corner of the temple still stand today as historical remnants.
Upon entering through the main entrance of the temple, devotees are first welcomed by a spacious Aanappandal (elephant pavilion), with a large Balikkal (sacrificial stone) placed at its centre, which immediately draws attention. The expansive Nalambalam surrounding the sanctum features beautifully carved granite pillars and traditional oil lamps. At the centre of the Nalambalam stands a large square-shaped Sreekovil, where Sri Varahamurthy is consecrated along with Goddess Bhudevi. The massive black stone idol, depicting Varahamurthy with a human body and boar face, is shown standing on the hood of Adishesha. Bhudevi is seated on his left lap, while the deity holds the conch, discus, mace and lotus in his four hands, reflecting exceptional craftsmanship. The main deity faces east, while on the western side of the same sanctum resides the Lakshminarayana idol, making it a rare feature where Varahamurthy faces east and Lakshminarayana faces west within the same Sreekovil. Outside the Nalambalam, on the northern side, there is an open-air Shiva shrine known as the Vadakkovil. In addition, Ganapathi and Ayyappa are worshipped in the south-west, while Subrahmanya and Durga Devi are enshrined in the north-west as subsidiary deities. Another notable feature is a rare sculpture of Chitragupta carved on one of the granite pillars inside the temple.
The main annual festival of the temple is Varaha Jayanthi. It is observed in memory of Lord Vishnu’s Varaha avatar, taken to protect Mother Earth and is celebrated over seven days in the Malayalam months of Meenam or Medam. The festival includes special rituals, Kalam Ezhuthu Pattu, cultural programmes and music events. On the final day, it concludes with a grand elephant procession accompanied by Panchavadyam and caparisoned elephants. Wednesday is considered especially important in the temple, as it is believed to be the day of Lord Varaha’s incarnation and darshan on this day is regarded as highly auspicious. Other important observances include the Prathishta Day in the month of Makaram, Ashtami Rohini and Navaratri, all of which are marked with special poojas and offerings. During Navaratri, special worship is also conducted for Goddess Durga and Varahi Bhagavathy, regarded as the divine energy form of Lord Varaha.
The most important offering in the temple is the Abheeshta Siddhi Pooja. Devotees perform this ritual with the belief that it fulfils their wishes and helps remove obstacles in employment, business and other areas, leading to success. Due to the presence of Lord Varahamurthy in his protective form of Goddess Bhudevi, Bhumi Pooja also holds special significance here. In this offering, devotees bring a handful of soil from their own land and submit it at the temple, believing it helps resolve land disputes, difficulties in selling property and obstacles in house construction. Lakshmi Narayana Pooja, performed for the deity enshrined behind the main sanctum, is considered especially beneficial for removing marriage-related obstacles and strengthening marital harmony. It is believed that performing this pooja continuously for three months on one’s birth star day brings great blessings. In addition, Chathushatham offering is made for relief from serious illnesses and for the well-being of the family. Other important offerings include lotus garland offerings, Koottu Ganapathi Homam for removing obstacles and Shiva Dhara at the Vadakkovil shrine, all of which are considered highly auspicious by devotees.
The daily rituals at the temple begin at 5:30 a.m. with the opening of the sanctum. This is followed by abhishekam, Ushapooja and Uchapooja. At around 10:00 a.m., the special Abheeshta Siddhi Pooja is performed for devotees seeking the fulfilment of their wishes. The temple then closes at 10:30 a.m. for the afternoon break and reopens at around 5:00 or 5:30 p.m. in the evening. The Sandhya Deepaaradhana, performed at sunset, is one of the most important rituals of the day. This is followed by the Athazha Pooja and other concluding rites, after which the temple is closed for the day at around 8:00 p.m.
