Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple

Ponkuzhi, Muthanga, Dist. Wayanad.

Located near Sultan Bathery in the Wayanad district of Kerala, the Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple is an ancient and historically significant temple situated in the heart of the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. Nestled on the banks of the Ponkuzhi River amidst a setting of natural beauty and dense forest, the temple is renowned for its legends asso-ciated with the Ramayana. It is one of the rare temples where Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman are worshipped together, making it an important centre of devotion for devotees. Situated along National Highway 766 (NH 766), close to the Kerala–Karnataka border, the temple is particularly famous for the Karkidaka Vavu Bali rituals. It is also a major halt for Sabarimala arriving from various states, attracting devotees throughout the year.
The history of the Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple is closely intertwined with the social, cultural and political heritage of Wayanad. Indigenous communities of the region, in-cluding the Chettis, Kurichiyars, Paniyas, Kattunaikkans, Ooralis and Kurumas, have safeguarded the temple and preserved its rituals and traditions for generations. During the period when the forest temples of Wayanad were under the patronage of the Kottayam Royal Family, their administration and upkeep were entrusted to these local tribal com-munities. The principal ceremonies at Ponkuzhi Temple were traditionally conducted under the leadership of the Chetti community. The renowned ruler of the Kottayam dynasty, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, maintained a close association with the forest temples of this region. During his resistance against the British between 1793 and 1805, Pazhassi Raja and his warriors used these temples as places of worship and temporary bases while carrying out guerrilla warfare in the forests of Wayanad. In later years, the administration of the temples in this area was entrusted to the Kuppathode Tharavad, a prominent Nair family that acted as representatives of the Kottayam rulers. For a long period, the site remained a simple sacred platform within the forest. After the 1970s, however, it was gradually developed through the collective efforts of local residents and devotees, eventually taking its present form with a sanctum sanctorum and nalambalam built in the traditional Kerala architectural style. Today, the temple is administered and managed by a dedicated devotees’ trust.
The legend of the Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple is closely associated with the Uttara Ramayana episode of the Indian epic Ramayana. According to tradition, after ascending the throne of Ayodhya, Lord Rama instructed Lakshmana to leave the pregnant Goddess Sita in the forest following doubts raised by one of his subjects. It is believed that Lakshmana brought Sita to this very forest region and left her here. Left alone in the wilderness, Goddess Sita is said to have sat beneath a large banyan tree and wept in sorrow. Devotees believe that the sacred pond seen near the temple today, known as Sita Theertham or Sita Kulam, was formed from the tears that fell from her eyes. The waters of this pond are regarded as holy and are believed to possess spiritual significance. Later, Sage Valmiki found the grief-stricken Sita in the forest and took her to his hermitage, where he offered her shelter and protection. An area near Mullankolly, located a short distance from the temple, is traditionally associated with Valmiki’s ashram and is believed to be the place where Lava and Kusha were raised. These legends give the Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple its unique spiritual, mythological and cultural significance. The Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple is built in Kerala’s traditional forest temple architec-tural style, blending harmoniously with its natural surroundings. Its design is simple and understated, without ornate structures or towering gopurams. A unique feature of the temple is the arrangement of the shrines, with the sanctums of Lord Rama and Lakshmana situated on one side of the forest pathway, while those of Goddess Sita and Hanuman are located on the opposite side. Surrounding the main sanctum are a tradi-tional Kerala-style nalambalam and balikkalpura, constructed using wood and granite. Near the temple lies the sacred pond known as Sita Kulam, which has been preserved in the traditional temple-tank style, with stone-lined embankments and steps that allow devotees to descend for prayers and rituals. Granite platforms and natural rock forma-tions have also been retained within the premises, preserving the character of ancient forest shrines. Flowing beside the temple, the Ponkuzhi River and the bali-tharpanam pavilions along its banks further enhance the site’s natural beauty.
The sanctums of the Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple are distinguished by their unique ar-chitectural layout. One of the most remarkable features of the temple is that its principal deities are not housed within a single enclosed complex. The idols are installed on beau-tifully carved granite pedestals and worship is traditionally performed with sandalwood paste offerings. The peculiar arrangement of the sanctums reflects the temple’s association with the legend of Sita’s exile. Near the sanctum of Goddess Sita, the presence of Lava and Kusha is also revered. Hanu-man is enshrined nearby in a protective posture, symbolising his role as the guardian and companion of Sita. The idol of Lakshmana is believed to embody the sorrow and remorse he felt after carrying out Lord Rama’s command to leave Sita in the forest. Instead of grand gopurams, the sanctums feature square granite bases topped with sim-ple tiled roofs, reflecting Kerala’s traditional forest temple architecture. In front of the main sanctum stands a small namaskara mandapam supported by wooden pillars carved with scenes from the Ramayana. The principal idols are sculpted from Krishna Shila (black granite) in the traditional style of temple iconography. In addition to the main deities, the temple complex also houses other shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayyappa, Lord Krishna, Lord Subrahmanya and Goddess Durga. As the temple serves as an important halt for Sabarimala pilgrims, the shrine of Lord Ayyappa holds special significance here.
The Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple observes various auspicious days and festivals through-out the year with great devotion. The most important among them is Sri Rama Navami, celebrated in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April), marking the birth of Lord Rama. On this day, special rituals, Ramayana recitations, annadanam (community feast) and cultural programmes are conducted. The Ramayana month observance during Karkidakam is another significant highlight, during which special poojas and continuous recitation of the Ramayana take place, attracting a large number of devotees. Guru Purnima is also observed with special prayers and devotional offerings. Being an im-portant halt for Sabarimala pilgrims, the temple witnesses increased activity and special rituals during the Mandala–Makaravilakku season. In addition, Vishu is marked with Vishukkani darshan and special poojas, Navaratri is observed with pooja rituals leading to Vidyarambham on Vijayadashami and Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated with special offerings to Lord Hanuman. The Karkidaka Vavu Bali ritual is also considered one of the most important observances of the temple. The main offerings at the Ponkuzhi Sree Rama Temple reflect the deep devotion and faith of devotees towards Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lakshmana and Lord Hanuman. For Lord Rama, important offerings include Palpayasam, Neyvilakku (ghee lamp), Tulasi mala and Purusha Sooktha Pushpanjali. Goddess Sita is offered rituals such as Pattu and Thali Charthal, turmeric powder abhishekam and Swayamvara Pushpanjali, which is performed for marital harmony and to seek a suitable life partner. For Lord Hanuman, major offerings include Vadamala, Vennakkappu, Aval Nivedyam and Vettila Mala. Lakshmana Swami is worshipped with Soumithri Pushpanjali and lamp offerings. A unique and highly popular offering at the temple is feeding fish in the sacred pond, Sita Theertham, with puffed rice, which devotees believe brings relief from illness, removes hardships and grants prosperity. In addition, the recitation of the Ramayana is an important offering performed for family well-being, peace of mind and overall prosperity.
